Unaware of 'Add note to self'
Pinterest is a visual discovery platform primarily used for ideating and creating visual boards. It's a treasure trove of inspiration for many creatives.
But what happens after you've hit 'Save'? 90% of users rarely revisit their saved Pins or take them out of Pinterest — leaving ideas unrealized. This case study explores a way to change that for professionals using Pinterest.
User Research
I conducted research interviews with 5 active Pinterest users and analyzed app reviews and Reddit threads.
Common themes emerged: 'I pin everything and forget about it' and 'Once I make a board, I have to go out of Pinterest to save or find similar images and use them.'
It was clear that users weren't lacking inspiration — but lacking systems that support to organize, revisit and take action on their Pins.

Proposed Solutions
Research and user flows revealed 4 key features to support Pinterest for Professionals. I designed low-fidelity wireframes to test these out.
Key Features
- Bulk download images to export from boards
- Publish boards to find clients
- Convert boards to visual template moodboards
- Add relevant info/products onto pins
Usability Testing & Insights
Conducted 2 rounds of usability tests for low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes. Recruited & interviewed 5 participants for each round over 2 weeks.
Design Changes Round 1 to 2
- Made download images screen easy to navigate away from once download is complete
- UI changes: Mobile tap friendly, making text bigger
- Added a prompt to specify where images get saved when downloading
- Added export type to the export options modal (PNG, PDF, etc.)
- Tested comments as alternative to notes on collaborative boards
Design Recommendations
17 design recommendations emerged from the research and testing process.
Key Recommendations
- Allow for export of images from a board
- Collaborate on Pinterest boards directly via comments/notes
- Export boards to preset templates for quick moodboard generation
- Rename existing functionality for enhanced readability — 'Organize' and 'More ideas' confused 70% of users
- Enhance visibility of 'Add note to self' feature — 100% of users weren't aware of it
